Have you ever felt like you’re just going through the motions? Like life keeps throwing curveballs your way, and you’re barely hanging on? Those moments can feel overwhelming and leave you questioning everything. But what if those challenges are actually God pruning you?
What is the purpose of pruning?
Pruning, in the spiritual sense, is about removing what hinders our growth so we can become more fruitful in our lives. Just as a gardener trims away dead or overgrown branches to help a plant thrive, God may “prune” aspects of our lives—attitudes, habits, or distractions that aren’t bearing good fruit. This isn’t to hurt or punish us, but rather about God carefully shaping us to become the best version of ourselves, just as a gardener shapes a vine to produce the best harvest.
Jesus explains this in John 15:1-2, saying, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” This pruning process is about growth and ensuring that we can reach our full potential.
Knowing the signs that God is pruning you can be incredibly encouraging. It means you’re not alone, and these challenges have a purpose. So, let’s explore these signs together and find the strength to move forward with hope.
What are the signs that God is pruning you?
1. Experiencing Hardships and Trials
Facing significant challenges or difficulties that test your patience and perseverance is a sign that God is pruning you. Every powerful figure in the Bible went through this process. My favorite examples are David, who endured years of being hunted by Saul before becoming king, and Joseph, who spent years in prison after being falsely accused of sexual assault, before rising to a position of leadership.
- “Whenever you face trials of many kinds, consider it pure joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
- Bible Verses: James 1:2-4, 1 Peter 1:6-7
2. Feeling Isolated or Alone
Periods of loneliness or isolation, where you feel separated from others or even from God, are often times when God is pruning you. We see this in the story of Elijah, who had just driven out idolatry in Israel, yet found himself being hunted by Queen Jezebel, who sought to kill him. During this time, God reminded Elijah that he was not meant to rely on his own strength, but on God’s. God would help him endure, as Isaiah 40:31 tells us: when we hope in the Lord, He will renew our strength, help us run without growing weary, and walk without fainting. This reminds us that, in times of pruning, God is teaching us to depend on His strength, not our own.
- Elijah said: “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”
- Bible Verses: Psalm 25:16-17, 1 Kings 19:3-4
3. Facing Opposition and Persecution
Encountering resistance or hostility from others because of your faith or actions.
- “Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
- Bible Verses: Matthew 5:10-12, John 15:18-20
4. Being Embarrassed by Following God’s Word
- Feeling a sense of embarrassment or shame when standing up for God’s truth, particularly when it goes against societal norms or expectations. God wants to remove the fear of what other’s think.
- “However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.”
- Bible Verses: 1 Peter 4:16, Romans 1:16
5. Being Led to Do Something No One Else Has Done
- Sensing a call to undertake unique or uncommon actions in obedience to God, often requiring great faith and courage.
- “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.”
- Bible Verses: Hebrews 11:7-8, Isaiah 43:19
